The Individualized Technical Studies program at Moraine Park Technical College allows students with unique and diverse backgrounds to design a program to meet their needs.

About the Program

The Individualized Technical Studies (ITS) is a flexible program for students with career objectives that can’t be met by existing degree programs at MPTC.

Students in the program work with an occupational mentor of their choosing to set career outcomes, stay on track and create a unique associate degree that combines state approved courses from two or more disciplines. At least 20 credits must be from one discipline.

What You'll Learn

Students in the Individualized Technical Studies program will base their learning from Career Outcome Statements that they set with their mentor. You may be eligible for credit for prior learning from previous work experience, coursework or military service training.

An occupational mentor must work or have recently worked in the student’s field of choice. They must be familiar with the skills and abilities that the student needs to gain to be successful. The mentor will also help the student choose relevant courses.

Earn your associate degree at Moraine Park and then apply those credits toward a bachelor’s degree. Starting at MPTC makes completing a bachelor’s degree affordable, accessible and convenient. Credit for Prior Learning

Transform the skills and abilities developed through previous experience into college credit through MPTC’s Credit for Prior Learning process. 

  • Transfer credit from other colleges/universities
  • Earn college credit for your military training and experience
  • Earn college credit via Advance Placement, CLEP, DANTES/DSST or MPTC Challenge Exams
  • Earn college credit from previous/current work and life experiences

Online students are not charged out-of-state fees.

  • $5.00 minimum per course Material Fee
  • $12.50 per-credit Supplemental Fee for Undergraduate courses
  • $4.50 per term mandatory Student Accident Insurance Fee

Financial Aid

Financial Aid is available for associate degree and technical diploma programs (those that are 2 semesters in length and typically with 28 credits or more). Processing can take 4-5 weeks after a student's completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is received. While attending Moraine Park during the 2024-25 school year, your estimated cost of attendance for one full year includes tuition of $4,462 (15 credits for fall and spring semester), fees of $338, food and housing of $3,008 (if living with parents, $9,147 if living on your own), books and supplies of $1,465, personal expenses of $3,608, and transportation of $4,017 for a total of $17,002. Your direct costs (those costs paid directly to the college) include tuition & fees. The indirect costs (costs not paid to the college) can vary from individual to individual and your own personal needs.

Coursework is based on the student's Career Outcome Statements. A minimum of 20 associate of applied science degree-level credits must be focused in one discipline. A discipline is described as a program cluster such as finance, information technology, manufacturing, or health care.

Program Outcomes

Students interested in the ITS degree work with their occupational mentor and academic deans to explore their career options and create a unique set of Career Outcome Statements that define competencies required for the student's success in their chosen career. An occupational mentor is someone who works in the student's field of choice or recently worked in that field, and is familiar with the knowledge, skills and abilities needed by the student to achieve on-the-job success. The mentor and a team of college staff assist the student in selecting relevant courses and guide them through their program.
